?Attention!?
With a loud thunder the recruits slapped their boots togehter, as Leutnant Kerman arrived to check on his troops. Not that it would make any difference. These recruits would most likely never see a real combat, just like the last ten contingents before them. He wanted to give a resignating sigh, but that could make a bad impression. He marched down the ranks in silence, checking the gear every few soldiers, and when he found a mistake he told his adjutant Harkam the necessary punishment. After about half an hour Kerman finished checking the recruits and gave the sqad leaders the instructions for the rest of the day. Like every year the training ended in a one-day wargame. They would be real soldiers afterwards, if they survived. What the recruits didn?t know (but many feared) was that this time they would be given real ammo and laserrifles. The deathrate was below 20 percent, but at least 50% got wounded. Slowly Leutnant Kerman salutatet to the soldiers, then he tourned around and went back to his office, followed closely by his assistant.
?Can i ask you a question, Leutnant?? Harkam approached carefully. ?You just did. And to satisfy your curiosity: The wargame will be held as usual. Talking about, how are our tanks doing?? Harkam flipped through his notes. The only four Leman Russ battle tanks on the planet and all belonging to this camp were over 300 years old and only thanks to the few talented mechanics on the planet still running. Once the camp also had had a techpriest-enginseer who took care of them. But during one of the wargames while attending to a striken Leman Russ he got in the crosshair of another tank. Since then the vehicles have to be repaired by the mechanics. With his present senior mechanic Raoul Kerman got a good mechanic, who could take apart every machine and put it back together, but without the helpful diagnosis-devices and the servitors his work was limited. -
