I thought you guys might want to know how one of the GW roolzboyz answered a question I had. It took a couple e-mails to get a clear answer, but here they are without any editing:

    Q:

How does the Bretonnian lance formation work when hit by a bolt thrower? I would assume that you would start with the front rank and roll to wound as normal, decreasing strength by rank, but the problem comes in the fact that the first (and only) model in the front rank has to be either a paladin, duke, or champion, if the unit has one. Does this mean that the character/champion will have to take the wounds from the bolt thrower, since there's no other model in the front rank of the unit? The rules for the look-out sir don't seem to apply, since the bolt thrower doesn't use a template. Is this just an inherent danger of the lance formation?

While I'm on the subject, how does wall of fire work on the lance formation? Does only the front model get hit, or does the entire edge of the lance get hit, since they could be considered to all be in the front rank?

    A:

For Bolt Throwers, refer to how many ranks the Lance Formation would count for. Once you have that, just roll against the unit, and don't worry about characters. As to the second, you would count the whole unit, yes.

    re Q:

When you say "how many ranks the Lance Formation would count for," do you mean based on the rank bonus, or based on the number of ranks? For example, would a lance of six knights count as three ranks, or two? Would a lance of 12 knights be considered three, four, or five ranks?

Also, for the wall of fire question, I was only wondering about the initial damage, which would normally affect the front rank of a unit. I would assume that if the unit moves through it, every model would take a hit, but when the spell is first cast, does only the front "rank" (the model leading the lance) get hit, or does the whole edge of the lance?

    re A:

When I meant ranks for the bolt thrower, I was referring to the rank bonus chart in the annual. So 5 Knights would take 1 hit, 6-9 would take 2 (since they have the equivalent of 2 ranks), and so on.

For the wall of fire, until an official FAQ says other wise, only count the lead model.
