      Betrifft: Alle Specialist Games

Nächste Woche geht das neue Forum für alle SG online, das alle bisherigen Foren ersetzen wird. Von der SG Homepage:

As many of you will already know, behind the scenes we?ve been working away on a new look Specialist Games website. Actually, although I say we, what I really mean is that Andy Hall, Keith Krelle and Stef Kepinski have been working away on the new look website, while I?ve contented myself with occasionally throwing a spanner in the works by saying things like ?Hmmm, I think that would look much better in a different colour?? or ?I know, lets change the logo that appears on every page in the website?? Well, I have to keep the guys on their toes somehow or another, don?t I?!

Seriously, though, Andy, Keith and Stef have done a fantastic job, as you will discover in just a couple of weeks time. However, patting my web team on the back is not the primary reason I?m writing this editorial. Instead I?m going to talk about the forums that form part of the new site, and which go live this very weekend!

You will not be able to post in the forums until later next week. The first four or so days are for registration only. Over the next fortnight we?ll gradually lock the older forums.

The first thing to say is that you will need to re-register before you can post on the new forums. I apologise for this, but for various arcane technological reasons it has to be this way. The second thing I?d like to say is ?Don?t Panic!? We?re going to keep the old forums up for at least the next few months. Although you won?t be able to post to them, you will be able to read through them, and this will allow you to copy and paste old material over to the new forum should you wish to do so.

The main change you will notice with the new forum is that there is only one forum for all of the games in the Specialist Games range. Up until now each specialist games system has had its own website. These have grown over time, in an evolutionary rather than a planned way. The result is a set of forums that hardened old grognards can find their way round quite easily, but which are rather difficult to find and confusing to use if you?re new to the site. In addition each forum community is pretty much unaware of what?s going on in the other forums, which means they can miss out on interesting bits and news and ideas. We?ve also found that the sheer number of different forums has made them difficult to moderate, and it?s only because we?ve been blessed with a dedicated group of very hard-working moderators that things have worked as well as they have up until now. In the long run, though, I couldn?t keep on expecting the mod?s to make up for deficiencies in the way that the forum?s were set up.

Because of this I?ve decided that the new website will have a single forum, which will be easy to find from the front page (or indeed anywhere else) on the new the website. To encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas the forum will have a single ?General Discussion? area. That?s right, one General Discussion area for all eight Specialist Games Systems! Don?t worry, there will be a tag system so you can easily spot posts about the games you?re interested in. Hopefully you?ll also now be able to spot posts for other game systems about subjects that interest you.

The new structure is also meant to make our moderators job rather easier. As part of this process we?re going to try and make it much clearer to members of the forum about what is and what is not acceptable behaviour on the forums. These rules and guidelines will be posted on the forums themselves, and I recommend you read them carefully because they will be strictly enforced from now on. The new format will also mean that all of the different moderators will be able to help each other out in moderating the forum; each will, of course, concentrate mainly on their own game systems, but just having a few extra eyes checking out the posts and available to provide cover is bound to make things much easier than they have been up to now.

In addition to the general discussion area, there will be separate sections dedicated to each game system. These will contain areas where players can ask rules questions, and another where they can post feedback on any experimental rules we have up for the game. We may add additional sections over time if they are needed.

The main reason for separating these areas off is to ensure that the games developers can easily see and refer back over any feedback on the experimental rules they are working on, and that rules questions get dealt with efficiently and promptly. These sections will include links to unofficial forums and discussion groups dedicated to the one of the games in the specialist range, but which are not hosted by Games Workshop.

The rules questions area will be moderated by specially selected mod?s that are permitted to provide official answers to rules questions. Our aim is to create a system that provides consistent answers time after time, and in order to achieve this the mod?s for this section will have to follow a strict set of protocols, which boil down to ?See if you can find the answer in the rulebook or in the official FAQ, and if not tell the player they have to dice for it for the time being.? Any questions which arise that the moderator can?t find an answer too, and which have come up at least three times or more over a period of a few weeks, will be passed on to the game?s development team, and the game?s development team will answer them as part of the FAQ for next official rules review. While no system is ever perfect, this will provide players of the games in the specialist range with the best Q&A service so far.

The feedback area is for feedback on the experimental rules we put up on the website. For those of you that don?t know, the experimental rules we post up are the new rules and army lists that the games development teams are currently working on. We put them up on the website so you can see what?s in the pipeline, and join in with the playtesting process if you wish to, and the experimental rules feedback areas are available so you can easily provide feedback and playtest results for games you?ve played with the experimental rules. Please note that they are not for long, rambling discussions about the rules, and neither are they a place to post ideas for alternative rules. The moderators will enforce this rule strictly, inviting people who want to discuss the experimental rules or post ideas for their own ?experimental rules? in the general discussion area, or to use the one of the unofficial forums or discussion groups that we provide links to.

All in all I think that this new format will provide a forum that is easier to use and more focused on providing a useful service for players of the games in the specialist range. It probably won?t be quite a ?hobbyish? as the current forums are, but I don?t think this is a bad thing. After all, there are plenty of other forums and Yahoo groups and mailing lists you can turn to for this kind of thing, while knowing that the Specialist Games forum is available to provide a place when you can have a friendly chat in a well moderated discussion area, or get an answer to a rules question, or join in with and provide feedback for the new rules that the games development team are working on.

As the guys are really busy putting the finishing touches to the new site there will be no Fanatic Online this week. Normal service will be restored next week.

      Best regards,
