Well, here is my games day report and general musings:
1. Interesting tidbit from 40K seminar here, you no longer need your opponents permission to play with special characters. That is any special characters. This is official. Straight from the head of the design studio himself.
2. Plastic Cadians are being done and will come out right before the new guard codex
3. Cultists will appear in the Eye of Terror Codex
4. The defiler is big, really big, about the size of a land raider. The jist is that GW thought it was silly to think that Abaddon has been sitting around for 10,000 years not thinking about any new weapons, so you might see new chaos designs coming out every so often from now on.
5. C'Tan is pronounced K Tan.
6. Interesting, renegade Tau will be appearing sometime after the chaos releases have run their course.
7. Codex Battlezone Zero Gravity is kind of on hold now as the developers are not sure there is enough imagery to support it.
8. Codex Eldar is a long way off. Probably two years. Harlequins may be in the new codex but this is not yet finalized. It sounded like Eldar are not a high priority right now. When the codex is released the new Wave Serpent will be in plastic.
9. There will not be a 4th edition for quite some time. Maybe a year to two, though Andy is beginning work on it now.
10. There will be rules in Codex Eye of Terror that links 40K, BFG and Epic together.
11. Studio is very keen on Chaos renegades and Huron and his band will be the template for them. The studio will be doing a list for these sometime in the near future.
12. As you have heard, each chaos legion will have it's own list in the chaos codex. The codex is 84 pages and they had a copy on hand though I did not get to see it. The Daemon rules as put in the recent WD may change slightly but are pretty much it. Word Bearers, Alpha Legion and Black Legion will pretty much be the template codex chaos legions. The others, kults, Ironwarriors, Nightlords will be more significantly different.
13. After codex chaos GW will release Codex Ordo Malleus. This will be followed by Codex Ordo Xenos and Codex Orde Hereticus.
Ordo Malleus works in some neat ways. There are a couple of different lists you can take.
The Gray Knights are the fighting force of the Ordo. You can take an entire Gray Knights force led by a Grand Marshal of the Gray Knights. Yes, there will be terminator and power armor Knights. All Gray Knights come with storm bolter and halbred. The storm bolteris gauntlet mounted. All gray knights have true grit so they basically have two attacks on charge even though force halbred is two handed weapon. Force Halbred works this way: If you are in power armor it adds +2 to your strenght but is not a power weapon. If you are in terminator armor it adds +2 to your strength and is a power weapon. If you are an independent character it adds +2 to your strength and is a powerweapon and is a force weapon. The comment was made that these guys are dead hard. They can also all deepstrike even if the scenario does not allow deepstrike. Yes I said all.
Every imperial army may take Gray Knights. If you want your Ordo Mallues army to be led by an Inquisitor and his henchman you can take Gray knights and up to 1 HQ, 2 troop and 1 fast attack choice (maybe elite fuzzy on this) from another Imperial army (Guard, marines).
GW thought it would be kinda funny for Ordo Mallues to be fighting armies where there are no daemons present. There will be rules which allow all other armies to take daemons. Yes, that means your orks can have daemons.
The Inquisitors retinue actually augments the fighting powers of the Inquisitor. If you add a flying skull it will increase the inquisitors initiative by +1. If you add a gun servitor, it will increase the Inquisitors ballistic skill etc. .
Deathwatch are the fighting force of the Ordo Xenos. Their codex will work the same way.
Sisters will probably be the fighting force of the Ordo Hereticus. Andy is very keen on keeping the sisters and doing their list in this codex. Still not totally in cement though. I think sisters players will be nervous for awhile but in the end Andy will find a way to keep them in the 40K universe.
14. Orks. No forseeable changes to their codex any time soon. GW feels orks can hold their own with any other army, it just may take players a little while to learn how to use them and tool them up.
15. The studio was asked about codex creep and the thought was expressed by some that newer codexes are more powerful . The reply was that they recognize that the perception is out there but basically all their playtesting does not support the theory. Also, the results of tournaments don't support it either. Basically studio feels that some of the newer armies will do well when they first come out because opponents have not found their achilles heel yet. After they do, any army can beat another army.
16. The models. Quite simple they are all superb. The Obliterators in person are 100% better looking than the pictures on the web. So are the Raptors. The Daemon Prince is just incredible as are the Thousand sons. Thousand sons will come in Tzeentches sacred number. Wizard is metal.
I don't play fantasy but if I did I would be buying a Khemri army. These are by far the best GW models I have ever seen. I will be buying many of them just to play in my D&D campaigns, especially the bone giant.
The Chaos Furies are really great and pretty large. The paint job on the web does not do them justice.
17. As stated in other threads you start out by buying a chaos lord and as you tool him up you can move him more and more to Daemonic. After adding so many daemon gifts you cross a line where your lord becomes daemon. The thought is that you can add gifts as you go and do some roleplaying.
18. Bloodquest the movie is no more. If anyone has an extra 120 million please call GW. GW will continue to work deals like this but it is up to the companies that buy the licenses to get backing. GW did say that their relationship with new line cinema is very good due to the success of the lord of the rings though so there is hope.
19. Turnout was much higher than expected at Games Day Chicago. GW was very happy (spoke with US head of sales). GW will be adding an LA Games Day as well.
20. For those of you in Ohio ( I live in Dayton) there are no GW stores planned in the near future.
21. Asked if Forgeworld is considering a US location and the answer was no. Forgeworld was set up to be a cottage industry.
22. Saw the monolith model and it is alot bigger than I thought it was.
23. The defiler will be as big if not bigger than a land raider. It is crab like and has a battlecannon and the ability to fight in hth.
24. Met Ryan Miller, the designer of Sabertooth and he was absolutely great guy. Hope him all the best.
25. GW sales reps bought me a beer at the hotel bar. Don't say they never give you anything for free. Cheers to them.
26. I have been to a few games days and I really felt the Golden Daemon had the weakest entries I have seen in some time. Nothing personal, just my own opinion.
27. And just for those of you who are a pain, there will be no Squats. Give it up.
28. The DA codex contains some new rules not seen before, but nothing major.
29. Eye of Terror campaign will put Cadia up for grabs. Studio is kinda concerned about that as many players have Cadian Regiments. What happens to those regiments if the planet falls? They are working on having an answer for this just in case it happens. Currently the thought is that ther are 100's of Cadian regiments all over the galaxy and that many Guard regiments use Cadian style equipment.
30. Cypher will have a big role in the Eye of Terror Campaign. Black Library will feature him in some publications.
Well that is all I can remember now. If I think of anything else I wll update. Enjoy.
