The film explores the origins of James T. Kirk, Spock and the crew of the USS Enterprise from the original "Star Trek" series and how these iconic characters came together. According to rumors, the story involves an elder Spock (Nimoy) and a group of Romulans (led by Nero, played by Bana) being transplanted into the past where Spock must prevent the Romulans from irreparably damaging the timeline. To do so, he will have to enlist the assistance of his younger self (Quinto).

Entertainment Weekly caught up with Chris Pine during the Sundance Film Festival and got the chance to ask a few questions about his role as Captain Kirk in the upcoming "Star Trek" film.

Are you feeling any pressure to evoke William Shatner?
I actually feel the exact opposite. I think the biggest mistake I could ever do would be to try to re-create what Mr. Shatner did. There are certain qualities that Kirk has that are vital for someone who is a leader of men. And those qualities, I definitely wanted to take from what Mr. Shatner did in the original series. But my job is to take something new, to take that and build upon it, really do my own thing. I just feel no pressure when it comes to that.

Is the pressure coming more from the fanboys and their off-the-charts expectations?
Yeah, sure, the Internet is not my friend in this case. Best to stay away. I can understand, I don't have that many credits and people are very worried that their Kirk is going to be destroyed. But I can only say that we're having a great time. J.J. [Abrams, the director] has been wonderful and the cast is phenomenal. I think what we're doing is very special.

Have you talked with Shatner?
I have not talked to Shatner. I wrote him a letter early on in the process and corresponded that way. I got a letter back from him, which is very nice. And I've met Mr. Nimoy a couple of times. He's been on set and we have a couple of scenes in the film, which will be nice, and I'm excited for those.

* The first trailer is being worked on right now, and will appear in theaters early to mid summer.
* Production is scheduled to wrap in the beginning of April.
* Different versions of the teaser have been released around the world, to not make the film seem overly American.
* Abrams' buddy Greg Grunberg turned down the chance to be in the movie, due to another project.
* The movie has about 1,000 visual effects shots.
* Whenever possible, actual sets are being used instead of green screens.

IGN got the chance to attend a press conference for "Charlie Bartlett," where actor Anton Yelchin answered some questions about his character, Russian navigator Pavel Chekov, in "Star Trek."

"The thing is about Walter Koenig was his accent was interesting," said Yelchin. "All of us had to make the choice of what we wanted to take from the original one and what we sort of wanted to bring to it. And there are certain things that I took from him. Like, the fact that he replaced every "v" with a "w," which is weird. And I thought it was important to bring that to the character. I talked to [director] J.J. [Abrams] a lot about what he wanted. And his thing was, like, we're not making something that's supposed to be the old 'Star Trek.' He's making his own movie, but I think people want to see what they love. And so we're all sort of trying to find things that will remind people of the old characters. And so that's been interesting sort of picking up little things."

He continued: "Chekov is the weirdest guy. Watching the old show really makes you realize just how strange, but incredible it was. They brought a Russian character on, right smack in the middle of the Cold War."

Yelchin added that he would not consider himself a Trekie, but he still loves the show. "I really think the old show, for what it was, is a great, great show," he said. "It's so perfectly cheesy and B-like, and absolutely unapologetic for it. And I think that's what works. It's like, they shot this thing where they walk up to a cave that looks like it's made out of Styrofoam and Spock says, 'Oh, this is definitely advanced technology.' And you're like, 'Yes, yes. That is advanced technology.' But it's fun. It's a really fun show to watch."

"The movie begins in the 'Star Trek' present - some time in the 'The Next Generation' timeline. Romulans head back in time, either to kill Kirk or his father and Spock follows them into the past, back when the Enterprise crew were young. These events change the history of the Trek universe, either creating a parallel timeline that the films will now follow or simply overwriting everything else that we know as 'Trek' history."

Ultimately, though, I wasn't making this movie just for the dedicated fans. I was making the movie for fans of movies. The final product, I think, doesn't require any prior knowledge of the show Star Trek. I mean, almost anyone, if you stopped them on the street and asked who Kirk and Spock are, they'd know. I think people will typically have some sense of those two guys. And then there are fans who know every episode and argue about what the Star Trek canon is. This movie does acknowledge a world that has pre-existed off the screen for decades, but when you see it, it's not going to be quite what you'd expect, and definitely not just a rehash of things you've seen before. It's a very new take on the thing that it's also beholden to. It's a very interesting balance.
