UK Gamesday 2003
Well frankly I knackered! Sunday dawned bright and very summery for UK GD which made the pre door opening wait in the queue quite pleasant for a change.
Fist port of call after doors opening was retail and Mat's spending binge on Cadian models, KASRKIN, COMMAND SQUAD, SENTINELS as well as Cadian Lieutenants. Also on sale we the very nice new Catachan variant of the Heavy Weapons kit complete with red bandana, big knives and Catachan deathworld ?flowers? to dress up the bases ! After that a quick trip to the Forgeworld stand and a nice new Per Heresy Mk 2b Land Raider for use as the base of my IW Warsmith?s new command vehicle. We met up the Ben whom some of you will know as Daemon Prince Adramlech from the EoT?s PLANETKILLER forum, we chattered for a while and I became one of the few recipients of a PLANETKILLER T-Shirt ? Ben you?re a star!
MAIN ARENA ?
A bit of a change round this year FW retail dominated one side of the main arena and was doing very brisk business all day. Display cases had on show a Nurgley variant of the new Chaos Warhound titan in a very dark green ?grungy? scheme. New mk IV Dreadnoughts are also superb, very nice detailing especially the Grey Knight variant Grey Knight. Lots of painted FW stuff in Cabinets, Inquisition Valkyrie, GK Thunderhawk were gorgeous. Over on the designers stand Will Hayes showed of the near complete Tau Orca drop ship this thing is huge comparable with the size of a Thunderhawk. Thetop opens up to show seating for up to 24 Firewarriors (seat Firewarriros were shown) as was a ?stooped? Battlesuit. Evidently the Orca has 3 crew, can caryy 24 Firewarriors, 6 Battlesuits or up to 20 Drones. Finished model will feature swivelling engines, opening rear ramp, a chin mounted weapon and the usaual Tau pilot cockpit removable cockpit/ejection system. A very impressive model. No prices quoted, expect it to be around Thunderhawk money. Elsewhere Simon Eagon was showing off a winged Hive Tyrant. A beautiful model with a wingspan comparable to that of a Balrog. More Kroot Karnloc?s were being worked on. One ?beast of burden? variant with lots of packs slung on it for use in ?mule train? style caravans. One variant with what looks like a large crossbow no top and 2 Kroot, evidently this weapon fires energy bolts. I would have thought the Kroot Ox large calibre Kroot rifle to be a more usual weapons fit, still a very nice model.
GAMES ?
Little disappointed with the 20 Titan mega battle. I?d seen various terrain pieces being worked on at GWHQ that I was told were for gamesday I didn?t see any of them. The Titan battle was an awesome spectacle to behold. At one end a huge drop pod which appeared to have a large teleporter which enabled the Chaos Titans to enter play. Warhounds of all the powers were represented. Rather cool Changer of Ways Tzeentch Titan with beaky head and weaponry, a Nurgle Warhound with fly style eyes and a huge wrecking ball CCW. At the other end of the table was a Warlord Titan in the Imperial line about 3-4 feet tall. Excellent model. Lots of IG based games taking part not many Space Marines in play, lots of Chaos though. Didn?t have time to get any dice rolling done simply too much to see and do. One game included a Trench system with Defilers in their gun ?pits? Iron Warriors, Cadians, and Imperial Fists thrashing it out.
SEMINARS ?
40K ? A very cagey Andy Chambers chaired the 40K seminar. With Andy Hall and Pete Haines. Slide presentation as usual was first up. All the new IG stuff was shown, to most UK attendee?s this was pretty ?old hat?. Next up Codex Witchhunters. Pics of the new Inquisitors and new SoB?s and the new Penitent Walker which it bigger than a Dreadnought! SoB?s are all metal no plastics. One thing of note the question was asked if Arbites were a troop option for Witchunters, answer was no but you their Stormtroopers had the option of taking shotguns instead of hellguns/lasguns. Nothing forthcoming about stats or special powers for Witchhunters was mentioned. Andy C voiced his pleasure at the Chaos win in EoT and announced there is a major shake up in 40K universe ?fluff? coming for 40k 4th edition?. And staying on 4th Ed we were shown pics of the new Genestealers in the presentation (which are not drastically changed ? think proper rending claws and more surface detail slightly less bulbous heads and you?ll have a good idea of what they look like. When Andy was asked if it would be Marines and Tyranids in the 4th Ed boxed set said he couldn?t comment (with a wry smile on his face- read ?Yes they are!?) Andy was keen to mention we won?t see to much of things after EoT has happened in the 40K timeline as GW plan to revisit earlier campaigns and fill in ?holes? in the fluff than any major advancements in the 40K timeline. Andy was tight lipped on when 4th ed would be in the shops and wouldn?t give a specific date (my money is last quarter 2004!).
Q & A?s ? Early work is starting on 2005 campaign, evidently such was the success of Web based EoT campaign the GW web team in the US who wrote the campaign pages have asked ?no more? and Andy said GW might even put in a special campaign web team together for 2005.
A classic question ?Why did Chaos win the EoT?? Andy said ?Cause they did!? this attendee then when onto spew forth various real world why Chaos couldn?t have won each one rebutted by Andy C. Methinks Andy was getting a bit tired of this guy by the end of the seminar ? THEY LOST ? DEAL WITH IT!
Major rules changes, Andy mentioned GW are looking at revised rapid fire rules with the possibility of adding the element of close range firefights in 40k rather than either shooting or assaulting ? I welcome this one! Final versions of the Assault rules and Vehicles rules will appear so don?t expect major changes in games mechanics in 4th ed other than those we?ve already had a taster of.
No new armies are planned, GW have enough to do to get the rest of the older Codices up to the current 64+page status without expanding the range and the fact that some races have a presence in other systems (Demiurg in BFG) doesn?t mean we can expect a 40k army for them. Although Andy mentioned Dark Eldar will NOT be phased out although, he?d like to overhaul the whole DE range sometime in 4th ed?s lifetime.
Couple of possible tweaks in the pipeline. Eldar may loose their Avatars to being special characters rather than a common HQ choice. Nothing new on Harlequins. No mention of anything on the Eldar Codex or future minis.
Space Marine codex will be around with 4th Ed. New plastic Terminators will be around for 4th ed. Expect a chapter ?traits? system to be in the codex to make variations on ?codex? chapters. Nothing was said whether DA//BA/SW would retain their own specific codices when revised Codex:SM is published though.
The infamous Codex: Deadzone, Andy Hall talked about this. Basically a revised version of Space hulk, this might well turn into a fully fledged game rather than an Codex addon to 40k.
FORGEWORLD ?
No Tony & Jervis this year only Tony on his own and he was very entertaining as usual. Slide presentation had lots of pics we?ve seen before. And as my pics didn?t come out of the new stuff their planning I?ll remember what I can.
BOOKS ? Second FW tome will cover Space Marine, Daemonhunter and Sisters of Battle vehicles ? lots of nice side elevation shots of Rhino, Thunderhawk and Land Raider variants were on the FW stand. New soB Rhino variants are planned to tie in with the release of Codex Witchhunters, sounds like GW and FW are working more closely together and FW will actually produce models to support the release of new mainstream armies. Also FW are producing campaign books, first likely to be Imperium vs Tau, as well as rules and ?actual? units used in the conflicts there?ll be lots of background in them. Players will be able to use elements of actual forces used in the ?real? battles to play campaign games. A series of these are planned in an around different campaigns that have been chronicled in the 40k timeline. Sounds a cool idea. 3rd FW book will concentrate of Xenos vehicles.
SPACE MARINES ? A number of things planned, extra armour for Predators, Dreads, more Dreadnought variants. Possibly extra Razorback weapons. Also the icon series of chapter specific icons for vehicles, Space Wolf, Ultramarines and Templars have already been done, more to follow.
TYRANIDS ? The above mentioned winged Hive Tyrant? that thing is gorgeous ? did I tell you that? And Tony?s ubiquitous ?More big monsters? slide which has been in the seminar for about 3 years now ?
SoB ? More Rhino variants, no more details I?m afraid.
IG ? Fully enclosed Basilisk, Medusa variants, command Chimera, possible ?missile? Chimera. More flyer variants, when drawn on this Tony mentioned there were things he couldn?t say because things were being done by GW ? Dogfight rules maybe????
TAU ? More Devilfish/Hammerhead variants, the Orca, new Tigershark variant, Tony also didn?t rule out a 40k scale Manta dropship shessshhh??
CHAOS ? More Chaos vehicle armour, a new BIGGER Bloodthirster OHHHH YES!!!!!! More chaos Dreadnought variants, might even be some special non- codex weapons, siege cannons were mentioned. Also a Chaos fighter. Not a Chaos version of a Lightning/Thunderbolt but a true Chaos aircraft.
NECRONS ? Harvester was mentioned, again, but nothing more - and this may be 2 years away!
KROOT ? More Karnloc variant as mentioned above.
That?s about all I can remember at present ?. Black Library stand had copies of the new Nurgle Liber Chaotica book and a few new bits and pieces. The new Ravenor =I= series starts in Feb 2004, new Space Wolf/Ragnar book ?Wolf blade?. I hope to have pics up soon.
