Welche Loyalen?

    The Raven Guard

Origins and History of Legion XIX

    ? Ash Barker 2000

    Corax

"And suddenly; upon the galaxy, there came a figure cloaked in black, and he swore vengeance upon the oppressors of man."

    - The Imperiad; Chapter I

The Raven Guard, Chapter 19, was founded in the last years of the great crusade. The Emperor and his legions came across a temperate jungle-world in the far west of Segmentum Obscurus. Orbital scans discovered a single Hive City of enormous proportion, but without power of any kind. Investigative teams led by the Emperor himself made a landing and discovered human inhabitants and Dark Age technological devices. The machines went unused by the natives, however, who lived in tribal communities around the base of the huge pyramid. Initial communication with the population provided the recent history of the planet to the researchers. According to the population the planet had recently been freed from domination by the inhabitants of the Hive, who had used the tribes as slave labour.
The people living around the huge city had suffered from this bondage for centuries, until the chief of one tribe, a man named Corax, united them in revolution. They swarmed into the hive, throwing off their chains and using spears and swords against the laser weapons of the city's defense forces. Ten thousand warriors died in the initial attack, but as they pushed their way into the higher levels of the Hives, they managed to destroy the massive power plant which provided the city with energy. With the halls in darkness, and their laser weapons useless because of lack of power, the defenders fell as the tribesmen hunted them through the shadowy halls and avenues. The better defenders retreated higher and higher up the spires of their city. Victory seemed theirs until the defenders unleashed viral bombs into the lower levels of the Hive.

The former slaves died in the hundreds, without any way of defending against the sickness. The attack halted by the plague, the natives did their best to defend the ground they had gained as the city's defenders pushed back for the first time in months. Their certain victory seemed doomed as the freed slaves, sick and demoralized, were pounded by fresh city troops. An expeditionary force broke out of the city, and massacred the women and children who were treating the sick behind the siege lines. Among the dead were the Felinon and Tigrissa, the old adopted parents of the Chief Corax. The messenger shook as he told the huge man the news, but he needn't have feared. White faced, he stared into the distance, then spun about and went to his weapon stand. Taking up his spears and sword, he left the room. Sentries were the last to see him as he disappeared alone into the tunnels of the hive.

With the disappearance of Corax, the other chiefs were unsure as to what to do. They sent out scouts to probe the enemies location and it was they who found the first of the massacres. In the darkness of the halls, with only torches for light, they came across a detachment of city forces, rent limb from limb with unimaginable force. This was the first act in what the tribes called The Vengeance.

Corax, driven blind with rage at the deaths of his family and people, waged a one man war against the City. He stalked the halls in silence, descending from air vents and service shafts, slaughtering every man he came across. Whole battalions fell to his blade as he danced higher and higher up the hive bringing death everywhere. Scouts followed him to the top of the spire and it was they who recounted to the people the detail of his final battle. Like a force of nature Corax hacked his way through the elite of the city's forces to confront the ruler of the city, Lord Cortez. His bodyguards dead or fleeing, he was trapped by Corax in his own chambers. The scouts came to the huge double doors in time to hear only the final words of the exchange between the two. Cortez stood pointing a laser pistol into the chest of the Chieftain as the tribal warriors came upon them and before they could act, the cruel lord shot him in the chest. The lance of light stabbed him squarely in the center of his body, burning a bright hole through him. But Corax did not fall. Covered in wounds from his battles through the hive, he stared Cortez in the eye and said, 'Vengeance does not end with death.' The Tyrant's eyes widened in shock as the Primarch's arm shot out, and struck the head from his shoulders. He stood staring at the body for a moment, and then turned, eyes blank, and walked from the chamber. When the men made to follow, they found no trace of where the Primarch had gone. The scouts returned to the chiefs and told them what they had seen, and that the war was done. Of Corax there remained no sign. He had not met with his people, but instead seemed to have wandered into the jungle. The chiefs declared the city cursed and none but the bravest or maddest dared to live in all but its lower level. The people of Deliverance believed the tops of the spires haunted by the bloodshed they had seen and the evil that had dwelt there. Still, no one could say what had happened to the great warrior who had purged the hive of its evil, some thought he had died of the wound Cortez had inflicted. Still others said his heart was already broken by the loss of his family, and he had left the world of men to dwell with the spirits of the jungle. The Imperial researchers informed the Emperor that the events told to them had probably occurred in the last ten standard years Curious about the nature of the lost Chieftain Corax, and perhaps suspicious as to his true nature, the Emperor executed a search for him. The natives, though recalcitrant because of the technology the Imperial forces displayed, grudgingly led them to the remote stretch of jungle where his family had been massacred. It was the only place they could think to look. Against the council of his advisors, the Emperor searched alone in the tract of jungle that the natives had said the great Chief had once made his home. It was there, amid the steaming woods, that a spear thudded into a branch above the Lord of Mankind's head. Completely still, the Emperor searched the trees with only his eyes, but his attacker remained unseen. Suddenly a twig cracked behind him. He spun around to see a tall, raven-haired figure eyeing him, crude sword in hand. The Emperor recognized his child, but before he could speak, the man swung at him. Unable to do anything else, the Emperor struck out with his mind, shattering the crude blade. The Primarch's eyes widened in shock and he dropped to his knees.
Like a man possessed, the wayward Primarch began to speak as though in a trance. He begged the Emperor's forgiveness, telling him he had had a vision foretelling his coming. He claimed a spirit had spoken to him, saying that a great bird from the heavens would come for him, with the power to destroy at a glance. That he was the power of the sun and the stars and the sky. It would then take him to the spirit world and there he would rejoin his family, his true family. There in the forest, the Emperor forgave his son his trespass and explained to him his origins.
Corax accompanied his creator back to the great vessel orbiting the planet. Missionaries and scholars were left behind on Deliverance, to aid in the rebuilding of infrastructure and education of the populace. Corax himself was later placed in command of the 19th Space Marine Legion, which was renamed the Raven Guard, in honor of Corax's pledge to defend the life of the father he had once threatened in folly.

    Fortsetzung!

    The Horus Heresy

"darkness from the void merged with the darkness in men's souls, and the endless war began."

    - The Imperiad; Chapter II

During the Horus' rebellion against the Emperor, the Raven Guard was fighting along the southern Galactic rim against an Ork Waghhhh led by the Warlord Kruk Bigteef. When the Traitor marines and Chaos forced fell upon Terra, the Raven Guard was too far from the Imperial core to take part in the fighting. It was only after the final battle aboard the heretic warlord's battle barge that the Ravens, rushing to their Lords aid, arrived. The Ultramarine and Space Wolf fleets had preceded them and the Traitor forces were already being pushed back into the disrupted area of space known as the Eye of Terror. Stricken with grief for having failed in his vow to protect his lord, the Primarch attended the Emperors admittance to the Golden Throne. There, amidst family, the Primarch of the Raven Guard swore his vengeance against his fathers murderers. Rogal Dorn, Jaghatai Khan, Ferrus Manus and Vulkan were all present at the ceremony. Roboute and Russ were absent in pursuit of the Traitors. They were the last men to see Corax in life apart from his legion and his exact words are known only in their memories.
The following morning the Wings of Darkness, Corax's flag ship, and the entirety of the Raven Guard's First company made a warp jump into the Eye of Terror. Corax shared none of his plans with his brothers, but the other Primarchs whispered to each other that the Raven had started another one-man war. Neither the Primarch nor the marines he took with him returned. After ten years Roboute Guilliman, the first High Lord of Terra, declared them lost.

    Alpharius

"It was a time of Betrayal; as brother turned on brother for reasons best forgotten."

    - The Imperiad; Chapter III

It is known that many of the Legions that took part in the great Crusade saw competition as a healthy expression of their devotion to the Imperial Cult. Even today, many chapters habitually see certain others as rivals. The Dark Angels and Space Wolves; for instance, nurse an ages old grudge started by their feuding Primarchs.

The Primarch Alpharius however, was a man driven to desperation by his competitive nature. The last of the Primarchs found, he was made Imperial Commander of the 20th Legion of the Adeptus Astartes mere years before the end of the Great Crusade and the beginning of the Horus Heresy. Having entered so late in teh game, he felt honour bound to strive harder and gain planets faster than any other Legion. It is whispered by Imperial Historians that it was this that
    proved his final undoing.

But he could never catch the other Primarchs, some of whom had been taking worlds back into the Imperial fold for decades before he had been found. Only Corax, who had been found a mere year earlier, was near the same level. Alpharius grew to obsess about outdoing the feats of the Raven Guard Primarch. For every world Corax took, Alpharius attempted to take two. But during the Graecia campaign his legion had been spread so thin, and been so mismanaged that the Raven Guard were dispatched to relieve them. The Alpha Legion watched as the Raven Guard took up their places and conquered the cities they had tried for weeks to break.

Alpharius was livid with fury at what he saw as an underhanded tactic to win favour. He began fabricating a in his head a conspiracy headed by Corax to undermine the respect of the other Primarchs held for him. In the end, it was this cancer of jealousy and competitiveness that prompted the Alpha Legion to rebel against mankind, and thus the Emperor.

It was not in Corax's nature to compete, however, and he never understood Alpharius' betrayal of the Imperium. He had simply fulfilled the wishes of his father, and sought no other reward that to fulfill his duty. When the Alpha Legion rebelled however, they broke the faith that was sacred to the Raven Guard. From then until the present, the Raven Guard and their successors have held a vendetta against Alpharius' spawn, and will go out of their way to be assigned to conflicts that they have been reported at.

    The Second Founding

"Those loyal Sons of Man that remained, they labored long to see the unimaginable power of the Legion taken from the grasp of the unworth ."

    - The Imperiad; Chapter IV

During the Second Founding, when the original Loyalist legions were split into smaller units; dubbed Chapters, the Raven guard spawned three successors. The Revilors and Raptors are also Codex chapters, operating still under Imperial Commanders and serving as the Emperor's loyal forces. Both chapters have proved their worth on a thousand battlefields, avenging still the betrayal and murder of their Emperor. The Black Guard operates almost entirely as an elite fleet. Unlike other Marine forces, which fight where and when they are needed, the Black Guard is on a permanent tour of duty as escort to Imperial Black Ships. They act as both protection and collection forces for the ships bringing the Emperor his fodder. The Black Guard have been charged with this all important duty since their founding and so important is their task that this has remained unchanged for ten thousand years.

    Mal kurz etwas inoffizelles:

+ Scouts like the Space Wolves (I'm sure this will tee the puppies off as some of them have been complaining about how GW has been giving all of their nifty rules away). These Scouts would be an elite "Recon" squad and the RG would still be able to take normal Scouts.

+ The ability for HQ independent characters, Command squads, and Veteran squads (excluding the Vet Assault squad, if included) to be infiltrators. Independent characters in Terminator Armour or on Space Marine Bikes lose this ability. This ability would not extend to Veteran Sergeants in Tactical, Assault, and Devastator squads or Bike squadrons.

+ Veteran Assault Squads and Honour Guard (or equivalent) like the Blood Angels. I'm actually kind of leery of this, but it would be appropriate if the RG favor the use of jump packs.

+ Change the Librarian psyker power to be something facilitating stealth. The only decent thing I can think of is to take the SW Storm Caller ability and re-name it Obscurement or somesuch (again, this will probably tee off the SW players, hee hee).

+ I like the idea for a viable Drop Pod army, but have found some difficulty in making workable rules. The easiest thing I can think of is to allow any unit using the Drop Pod Deep Strike (not a Terminator's Teleport Deep Strike) to re-roll the scatter dice for the Deep Strike. The result of the second roll must be taken.

Of course, there have to be some balancing rules (for the Deep Strike re-roll and the infiltrators rule); so how about...

+ Need for Stealth In addition to speed, the Raven Guard Chapter relies on stealth and quiet in order to surprise the enemy. As such, an RG army will take a maximum of one tank that is not a transport (no, Land Raider variants are not transports.) Also, an RG army will take only one of the following in any army: Land Speeder squadron, Typhoon, Tornado, Bike squadron, Attack Bike squadron.

    Mentor Orden - Einheiten Zusammensetzung

    Achtung ! Hausregeln

    Mentor Legion Special Rules

Mentor Bolt Guns: The Mentor's experimental Bolt Guns are equipped with improved ammunition which boasts an enhanced explosive effect. This results in the gun having an AP of 4 instead of 5.

Plasma Missiles: The Mentor Legion also make a study of alien technology when they can get their hands on it and have developed crude copies of the Eldar Plasma Missiles. Any Mentor Legion Marine carrying a Missile Launcher is automatically assumed to be carrying Plasma Missiles as well. These have the same effect as a normal Frag Missile but if it causes any casualties, then the targeted squad must take a Pinning Test immediatly.

    0-1 Mentor Tactical Squad

    Elite, 190 points

    Troop Type WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
    Mentor 5 4 4 4 1 4 1 8 3+

Squad: 1 Sergeant and 9 Marines

Weapons: Mentor Bolt Guns, Frag Grenades. The Sergeant may replace his Bolter with a Bolt Pistol (still firing the enhanced ammunition, so AP4, though the Web cannot be used) and a close combat weapon.

Options: One Marine may have either a Flamer +6, Plasma Gun +6 or a Meltagun +10. Another Marine may have a Heavy Bolter +5, Missile Launcher (including Plasma Missiles) +10 or a Lascannon at +15. The Sergeant may take any equipment from the Space Marine Armoury.

Rhino: The Squad may be mounted in a Rhino at +50 points. The Rhino may be upgraded as normal.

    Special Rules

Space Marines: The Mentor Legion are Space Marines, so all normal Space Marine rules apply.

Targeting Web: The Web is a series of helmet and neural implants which enable up to 5 Marines to simultaneously fire at a single target with their Mentor Bolt Guns. The Web has the effect of concentrating the fire in to one mighty shot with greatly increased effects. Every Marine equipped with the Web must be exhaustively trained in its use, many testers are unable to cope with the mental strain of the implants and are thus unsuitable users. Furthermore, the equipment is extremely rare, having only recently been developed and is therefore unlikely to have entered service with other Chapters. Up to 5 models in the squad may use the Web at the same time and they must fire at the same target as the rest of the squad. However, for every Marine using the Web after the first, the Strength of the shot goes up by one (so 5 Marines firing would give a Strength of 8) and so long as at least three Marines are using the Web, the AP becomes 3. Only a single to hit roll is made for this attack and any other firing in the squad is taken as normal. Only one Web at a time may be used in the Squad, to avoid targeting confusion.

    0-1 Mentor Elite Cadre

    Elite, 220 points

    Troop Type WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
    Elite Cadre 5 5 4 4 2 5 2 9 3+

Squad: 1 Sergeant and 4 Elite Cadre Marines

Weapons: Mentor Bolt Guns, Frag Grenades. The Sergeant may replace his Bolter with a Bolt Pistol (still firing the enhanced ammunition, so AP4, though the Web cannot be used) and a close combat weapon.

Options: All the Elite Cadre may take any equipment from the Space Marine Armoury as if they were Independant Characters. One of the Elite Cadre may have a Time Warper for +25 points. Another may have a Shift Field for 25 points.

Rhino: The Squad may be mounted in a Rhino, if it has not been split up, at +50 points. The Rhino may be upgraded as normal.

    Special Rules

Space Marines: The Mentor Legion are Space Marines, so all normal Space Marine rules apply.

Targeting Web: The Elite Cadre use the Targeting Web as well, following the rules laid down for the Tactical Squad.

Elite Cadre: The fighting prowess of the Elite Cadre is renowned throughout the Imperium and army commanders are often keen to have the Mentors lead their squads into battle. The Elite Cadre may be split up to lead any other squad in the army. If the squad has Jump Packs or Bikes, then the Mentor leader must be equipped in the same way. Note that the Elite Cadre are NOT Independant Characters and so must either join a squad or form one of their own - they may never leave a squad once attached. It is possible to just split one or two of the Elite Cadre off and make a smaller squad of Mentors.

Time Warper: The Time Warper is another piece of advanced Imperial technology which is being field tested by the Mentor Chapter. This particular device enables a unit to make dramatic moves across the battlefield, further than is normally possible. The device is physically unimpressive, a small box with a few buttons, runes and dials, no larger than the palm of the human hand. The Time Warper draws tiny portions of the Warp into itself and converts this energy into sub-atomic particleswhich are able to effect time in a very localised sphere around the device. At the start of each Movement Phase, the Imperial player may decide to use the Time Warper. Roll a D6. On a 4+, the device functions properly and the unit may move twice as far as normal in the Movement Phase.

Shift Field: The Shift Field is a new piece of protective equipment similar to the Iron Halo and Rosarius. However, the Shift Field has the ability to encompass an entire squad. It is a man-portable pack which can be clipped onto a belt or strap. The Shift Field distorts light around a squad making it impossible for opponents to pinpoint any of the models. Consequently, the unit is always considered to have a 5+ Cover Save against shooting attacks. It has no effect whatsoever against close combat attacks.
